"Hearing, Understanding and then Doing God's Word
The Comforting Christ
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God[a]; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many
rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I
go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”
In the midst of life and all the ups and downs that life brings we can be discouraged, disheartened and upset.
Jesus Christ offers his followers comfort.
I. Jesus comforts his followers with a command
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me”- vs. 1
A command is an order, given by a superior to a subordinate. Jesus had shared with his followers of his
impending death, resurrection and departure. He knew this would be upsetting news. He knew beforehand that
they’d be upset and sad.
Jesus knows when we are sad. He knows when we are confused. He knows when we are mad. He knows when
we are depressed and in despair. And of course, Jesus knows when we are troubled!
"Trust in God. Trust also in me." He comforts us with a command not to be troubled. There is no reason to be
troubled when we trust in God and when we trust also in Jesus.
II. Jesus comforts them with a Commitment
"In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a
place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you
also may be where I am." – vss. 2, 3
Jesus informs his followers that he must leave them so he could prepare a place for them and the disciples must
go out to prepare a people to meet him there. As Jesus was preparing a kingdom - the disciples were to go out
and prepare a people for that kingdom.
We can find great comfort in commitment of Christ to come back and take us to be where he is. That perfect
place. The Lord is taking his time to prepare a place for you. You will have the best of the best and lots of it and
an eternity to enjoy it.
III. Jesus comforts them with a Course
"you know the way to the place where I am going" – vs. 4
The followers of Jesus were reassured that as they worked to learn of the Lord and His ways, and then follow in
that path, they could be confident of an eternity with Him, where he is.
Following in the path of the Savior allows for us not to have to figure out which way to go. We just follow his
path – His Word! Our present and our future are in his hands, if we only follow.
